Some things we as a group believe about being a good global citizen:
• Helping other citizens when they’re in need, regardless of race/color/sexual orientation/religion
• Not discriminating against people who are a citizen of a different country.
• Not being arrogant/nationalist : people who are nationalist usually aren’t good citizens because they think they are better than everyone else and usually have radical ideas
• Treat the environment with respect, recycle, don’t litter. That is beneficial to the beauty of your country and world and can save money by not having to harvest new resources and waste energy.
• Being an informed citizen. Pay attention to politics, go to town halls, meetings, do your homework , know your subject, become an expert in something that you care about, etc. Be aware of your responsibilities as citizen in society.
• Be an activist. If you see something that is unjust it’s the responsibility of a good citizen to try and work for something better. If you just stand there and do nothing to help solve the problem, then you are just as responsible as the person who is creating the problem.
• Respecting people’s opinions and views. Always having an open mind and always be willing to learn. In life everybody has the freedom of speech and the right to their own opinion according to the first amendment of the Bill of Rights
• Being an informed consumer, knowing where your products come from. Buy organic/fair trade; don’t support sweatshops, support local/American made products.
• Expose yourself to the world, travel, study abroad, explore other cultures/customs. People in the United States are very closed minded and do not take the time to learn about other countries. Take the time to expand your horizons and to learn about another culture.
• Volunteer your time and/or donate to a charity. One should always look for an opportunity to volunteer their time to help out a good causes whether is building houses with Habitat for Humanity or volunteering you time at a nursing home, anything is better than nothing.
Human beings are used to living under laws and patterns that are dictated to us by society, but following those patterns does not make us good citizens. To be a good citizen first you have to be a good person. By that I mean that you have to be full of values, principles, ethics, etc. When joining all these aspects together you will find out that there is nothing else to be needed.
One important aspect for being a good citizen is to help people. All around us, we can see there are always people in need for our help. Our job as good citizens is to help those kinds of people. When talking about the people that need our help, I am not only talking about the poor ones, but also the pregnant woman who cannot carry a heavy package or the old man that cannot cross the street. Remember that little actions make the difference.
Another important thing we have to remember for being a good citizen is to have an active participation in our community. There are a lot of ways we can do that. When elections come for voting for the governor, we have to be in the line ready to give our vote. When there is a gathering of our neighborhood for deciding about the maintenance of the streets, we have to be there to tell our point of view.
The last recommendation for being a good citizen is the respect toward the people that live around us. We have to remember that as we have rights, they have them too. Respect is one of the most important bases when living in a society. We all have freedom, but it is restricted to certain point. We cannot consider a killer or thief good citizens as they have violated that restriction.
Being a good citizen is taking responsibility with what goes on around you.
What a good citizen means for our Government:
• As citizens, it is important that we understand what is going on in the world, and more importantly in our country.
• A good citizen should understand what his/her government is doing and how it works.
• As President Lincoln noted in his Gettysburg Address, each of our government’s is "of the people, by the people, and for the people."
• As citizens, we should also pay attention to the government and its power to make sure that it doesn’t take on too much power or responsibility.
What a good citizen means for our Community:
Leaders and families in our society, are important, but not quite enough to have a successful society. We rely on each other on an everyday basis for food and housing.
Some examples of how we can be good citizens in our society: Help the Elderly, Donate Blood to Those in Need, Have a Relationship With Your Neighbors, Give Away Items You don't need to Those Who Need it, Recycle, and Volunteer.
How not to be a Good Citizen:
Voting is one of our most important responsibilities as citizens of the United States.
Even though voting is very important, less than 45% of Americans register to vote.
And of that small 45% of our population, only 35% of those registered voters actually go out and vote.
Most people try to avoid Jury Duty when they can.
Community Service most of the time is looked at as a last resort, only when you have to.
As citizens, there are many ways we can be poor citizens, and it is widespread.
We hear of the work of our government, media, school, judicial, and businesses. Yet, most of the population does nothing about all of these things.
All of these things listed above are things we should not do, things we should do:
Voting is a very important responsibility of being a citizen of this country, and any country.
Instead of 45% registering, most all of us should register to vote.
Instead of only a tiny 35% of our whole country voting, half at the least, even 3/4 of our population should get out and vote.
Voting and other things like Jury Duty, Community Service, and other activities are things we have to take part in if we want to be considered as good citizens.
